Starting something unfamiliar, especially when it involves your health, can bring up all kinds of feelings - uncertainty, hope, maybe even a little nervousness. This post is for you: a gentle, grounded introduction to what acupuncture is (and isn’t), what you can expect in your first session, and how I work with you to support your body’s natural rhythm and healing process.
What is Acupuncture, Really?
Acupuncture is one of the foundational practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It’s a gentle therapy that uses very fine, sterile needles placed at specific points on the body to support the smooth flow of Qi (our vital life energy) and restore balance between the body’s systems.
But more than that, it’s an invitation to slow down. To come home to your body. To be listened to, fully, in a space where all of you is welcome. Acupuncture doesn’t override your body or force it to behave a certain way. Instead, it nudges your system gently back toward balance, supporting the natural rhythms of your body, mind, and spirit.
What You Can Expect from Acupuncture with Me
At my clinic in Brisbane, treatments are tailored thoughtfully to you. No two people receive exactly the same care, because no two bodies, or life experiences are the same.
Here’s a little of what the process looks like:
The Consultation
Your first session begins with a conversation. We’ll explore not just your symptoms, but also your sleep, digestion, cycle, emotions, energy, lifestyle and more. In Chinese Medicine, everything is connected, and understanding your patterns helps me understand the root of what’s happening beneath the surface.
Diagnostic Tools
I may look at your tongue and feel your pulse, tools that help me assess the internal state of your body in a subtle but insightful way.
The Treatment
Tiny needles (much finer than those used for injections) are gently inserted into specific acupuncture points. Most people are surprised at how relaxing this part is, often drifting into a peaceful rest state. Depending on your needs, treatments may also include moxibustion, cupping, massage or gua sha.
Aftercare and Integration
Acupuncture continues to work after you leave. Some people feel lighter or more centred, others notice improved sleep, digestion, or emotional clarity over the following days. We may also talk about gentle lifestyle or diet shifts that can support your healing between sessions.
A Space for Softening
Many of the people I see come in feeling tired, wired, overwhelmed, or disconnected from themselves, and they leave feeling a little more spacious. More grounded. A little more themselves again. That’s the heart of this work for me, offering a space for softening, slowing down, and restoring the quiet intelligence of your body.
If you're curious about how acupuncture might support you, or still have questions - I’d love to hear from you. You’re welcome here, just as you are.
Warmly,
Lou
