Caring for children’s wellbeing through acupuncture is truly one of the most rewarding aspects of our work. Parents are often pleasantly surprised at just how gentle, comfortable and even enjoyable acupuncture can be for children. It’s a very different experience from what most people imagine when they think of needles, and many little ones leave their session feeling calm, settled and cared for.

Acupuncture may assist with a variety of childhood concerns. Common areas we support include digestive health such as constipation, reflux, food sensitivities or recurring tummy aches, sleep challenges like difficulty drifting off, frequent waking or restless nights, and supporting immunity for kids prone to colds, ear infections or coughs that linger. Acupuncture can also nurture emotional wellbeing, helping to ease anxiety or big feelings while encouraging healthy growth, development and resilience.

In our treatments, we often incorporate Toyohari tools, which are specially designed Japanese instruments that never penetrate the skin. Instead, they are gently placed on or moved across the surface to restore balance in the body’s energy. Children usually find this both intriguing and enjoyable. Depending on their age and comfort, we may also use fine, hair-thin needles or supportive options such as press-tack needles or ear seeds, always applied gently and only if the child feels completely at ease.

Acupressure is another favourite, using soft pressure or massage on specific points. This style of touch often feels familiar and comforting to children, making it a lovely way to support them. One of the most treasured parts of treatment is the use of moxibustion, or ‘moxa’. This traditional method uses the dried herb Mugwort to create gentle warmth on the body. It can be applied as small cones on acupuncture points or with tools like the tiger or elephant warmer, offering a soothing, nurturing heat that children usually love.

Sessions are kept short, lighthearted and always adapted to each child’s comfort level. We show them the tools, let them interact and explore, and move at their own pace, never forcing anything. Children’s bodies tend to respond quickly, and parents often notice their child seems more balanced, resilient and settled afterwards. Our goal is always to create an experience that feels safe, respectful and encouraging, so that children associate acupuncture with something positive, gentle and deeply supportive.
